Is a career in research for u?

July 19, 2008

Being a Science student…. its definitely not a bed of roses. Especially in India where the “SCOPE” of science is said to be very limited(mere scope being teaching or research) and the paybacks are not that rewarding, students sooner or later face the dilemma of leaving science or continue with it. I being a science graduate myself, know the uncertainties one faces while making the decision of a life time i.e choosing a career. The situation is worsened by the fact that not many of us know what research is actually about. Its no less challenging than a corporate job or that of the work of a civil servant. With all the qualities the beforementioned professions require, one needs to have a scientific aptitude i.e one needs to be logical, rational and open to possibilities.

If you are in your bachelors pursuing any of the basic sciences, and are really keen on pursuing research as your career or even if you are struggling with your mental chaos over science, then Summer research programmes(SRPs) are for U!

Some of the institutes which provide paid Summer Research Internships are: IASc, JNCASR, TIFR, NBRC, IIT, ACBR, BHU etc.

The applications for IASc SRP are out by the month of December and the deadline lies mid JAnuary. the application should include a students’ resume, a brief proposal of the subject on which the applicant would like to work and two letter of recommendations.

A summer research fellow(SuRF) gets approx. Rs.5000 p.m.

Other institutes have approx. the same procedure, varying only in the dates of application. Relevant information can be found on their Official websites.
